Grand by design

Chatting with Kerry Ann was like sharing an inside joke. She has a light and easy laugh and a warm Jamaican accent. She is the Director of Sales for Iberostar Hotels & Resorts and she was excited to talk to me about José Deudero, the Majorcan designer responsible for the new Iberostar Grand Hotel Rose Hall. “My favourite spot at the Grand is the lobby,” she admits. “I love sitting there and watching guests arrive. The look on their faces when they walk in is amazing. They are always so surprised, almost stunned. The lobby is just that beautiful.” Deudero’s design draws on some of the best traditions of classical Greece and Rome but achieves a fresh, elegant simplicity. Lovingly polished marble and granite shine and sparkle everywhere. A dramatic staircase sweeps up in two great curves and the entire space is full of warm lustrous sunlight.

“I am always impressed by how much the staff seems to care about this place,” Kerry Ann continues. “They were all so nervous and proud when King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía of Spain stayed with us for the grand opening in January 2009.” Apparently some of the paintings and sculptures throughout the resort were gifts from the Spanish monarchs in thanks for such an enjoyable stay. “We aim for flawless service,” says Kerry Ann. “Flawless with a Jamaican smile,” she laughs.

Her favourite spots at the other two Iberostar resorts in Rose Hall, Jamaica?  At the Iberostar Rose Hall Beach, it’s the theatre that offers up great entertainment for the whole family night after night. And at the Iberostar Rose Hall Suites, it’s the steps down to the infinity pool. I suspect that this choice has less to do with design and more to do with the pleasure of dipping into the warm waters of the pool and surfacing to the amazing view out across the perfect blue of the Caribbean Sea.

Start planning your vacation at the decadent, adults-only Iberostar Grand Hotel Rose Hall, the all-suites Iberostar Rose Hall Suites or the family-friendly Iberostar Rose Hall Beach in Jamaica.
