Costa Rica is one of the most biologically diverse places in the world. It’s only about 0.1% of the world’s landmass but contains 5% of the world’s biodiversity.

1. Poas Volcano National Park

Poas is one of Costa Rica’s five active volcanoes. The Botos Lake Hiking Trail is about 1 km long and winds through cloud forest to Laguna Botos, a brilliant aquamarine lake that occupies an extinct crater.

2. Manuel Antonio National Park

The wide beaches, mangrove swamps, primary rainforests and marshy woodlands, bordered by the clear waters of the Pacific Ocean are havens for over 100 mammal species including the highly endangered squirrel monkey.

3. Arenal Volcano National Park

Since 1968, Arenal Volcano has been consistently active with small, daily eruptions known as strombolian activity. Explosions produce impressive ash columns and send boulders down the slopes.  On clear nights, visitors can enjoy fiery displays of lava and glowing boulders from the safety of several nearby hotels and hot springs.

4. Irazu National Park

On a perfectly clear day, visitors can see both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts from atop the Irazu Volcano. The principal crater, some 3445 feet in diameter, is filled with lime green water. Depending on mineral concentrations, the lagoon can also take on a red hue.

5. Tortuguero National Park

Tortuguero is only accessible via plane or boat. There are no roads leading into the village itself, which makes this park truly one of the great places for wildlife discoveries including green, leatherback, hawksbill and loggerhead sea turtles that lay their eggs on the beaches.
