Long distance calls

Telephone calls from your hotel to Canada are expensive and service charges are high.  We would suggest you ask your family and friends to call you, while in Germany.

Phone calls are charged per minute, including local calls. Rates vary considerably, depending on time of day and distance. Calls are much cheaper between 18:00-09:00 and all day at weekends and on national public holidays. The lowest rate is between 21:00 and early morning, which applies to long-distance calls in particular.

For international calls, reduced rates are charged for some countries at certain times of day. Please note that calling from a mobile has different and usually higher tariffs.

One of the cheapest ways to keep in touch with your family and friends is to use an international prepaid calling card

Emergency

You can ask for a doctor or a dentist through your hotel.  Keep all your receipts.

Tourists requiring urgent medical care should go to the nearest hospital emergency room (airports and many train stations also have medical teams and first aid facilities).

Banking
In general banks are open from 08:30 or 09:00 until 16:00. On Wednesdays smaller branches are often closed, and larger banks may close at 13:00. Banks frequently stay open until 18:30 on Thursdays

Currency
The German currency was previously the deutschmark, but it is now the Euro

Getting around

Berlin's integrated public transit system is composed of U-Bahn (underground), buses, trams, S-Bahn (light rail) and ferries, which you can use to get almost anywhere in the city.

Bus / Metro

The network of local transport in Berlin consists of bus lines, tramlines and rail lines. The extended transit system will take you easily and safely to any sight or attraction in the city.
The local public transport system is constantly expanding and upgrading schedules.

Train

The new central station Berlin Hauptbahnhof, in the heart of Berlin, was opened in 2006. It is located in the city centre and is well connected to the public transport system. In addition, the city has four other train stations located in different areas of the city that operate long-distance trains.

Taxi

Berlin taxicabs are easy to spot on the street, as they are all beige, very often Mercedes Benz, with a visible TAXI sign on the roof. With over 7000 taxis, they are also quite easy to get hold of. Taxis can be hailed in the street, or picked up at taxi stands across the city. Taxis in Berlin are comfortable, known to be safe, and quite an economical choice, compared to other European cities. Taxi drivers also generally speak English (at least to some extent).

Berlin taxis tend to be metered; fixed prices are rare. The meter starts at ¬3.

Sightseeing

Optional excursions are a great way to enhance your Air Canada Vacations holiday. Choose from a wide variety of activities and excursions available at your destination. For more information or to reserve your excursion, please see our activities section

Tipping

Wilmersdorfer Strasse boulevard consists of a huge number of shops and department stores. Different kinds of shops are found right next to each other. Therefore a little shopping stroll can become an exhilarating pleasure.

The Hackescher Markt (Hackeschen Höfe) has courtyards for the trendy and its bordering streets have become a must-see, full of unique and quirky shops and boutiques.

The popular shopping zone in Steglitz consists of two shopping malls, a shopping forum and the huge Galeria. It offers a diversified selection of shops. Besides the subsidiaries of the big shopping centres and well-known labels one can find numerous smaller boutiques.
