Long distance calls

Telephone calls from your hotel to Canada are expensive and service charges are high.  We would suggest you ask your family and friends to call you, while in France.

Prepaid calling cards are available for purchase at France Télécom agencies, the Post Office, tobacconists, newspaper kiosks and Métro stations. If you decide to call from your hotel room, always check the cost first, as an additional service charge may be applied.

Emergency

You can ask for a doctor or a dentist through your hotel.  Keep all your receipts.
Tourists requiring urgent medical care should go to the nearest hospital emergency room (airports and many train stations also have medical teams and first aid facilities).

Banking

Standard banking hours are Monday to Friday from 9am to 4 or 5pm. Some banks close at mid day (noon/12.30pm–2/2.30pm); some are open on Saturday 9am to noon. All are closed on Sunday and public holidays. They will have a notice on the door if they do currency exchange. Money-exchange bureaux stay open longer (until 6 or 7pm),

Currency

The official currency used in France is the Euro which is divided into bills of 5 €, 10 €, 20 €, 50 €, 100 €, 200 € and 500 €. Coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents; 1 € and 2 €.
All major currencies can be exchanged at banks. Look out for the "Crédit Mutuel" or "Crédit Agricole" which have longer opening hours. Some hotels will also exchange foreign currency but shops and smaller hotels are prohibited to accept it by law. Traveller's cheques and all major credit cards are also widely accepted.

Bus service is available throughout the entire city area. The network of buses and trams is called the CUB (La Communauté Urbaine de Bordeaux) which offers over 90 different lines throughout the city centre.

Tipping

In France, all prices shown include tax and service. However, if the service has been particularly good, you may wish to leave a tip in order to show your appreciation. As a general rule, the amount is 5-10% of the total bill.

The water supply is safe for drinking. If you ask for water in a restaurant, it will be bottled water (for which you'll pay) unless you specifically request une carafe d'eau (tap water).

Electricity

In general, expect 200 volts with a frequency of 50 Hz. Adapters are needed to fit sockets. Many hotels have two-pin (in some cases, three-pin) sockets for electric razors.  It's best to ask at your hotel before plugging in any electrical appliance.
