Airport check-in

It is recommended that you present yourself at the airport counter of the airline indicated on your e-ticket.  Please refer to aircanada.com for details.

Hotel check-in

Upon arrival at your hotel, please identify yourself at the front desk with your Air Canada Vacations voucher. You will then be assigned your accommodation. Passport must be presented upon check in.
Hotel check in times may vary depending on the property but generally check-in time in most hotels is 3:00PM

Long distance calls

Public Phones take both coins and phone cards. Public phone that display stickers showing flags of different countries can be used to make international calls with operator assistance.  For International Calls check the Proximus international offers to find the one that suits you best.

Emergency

You can ask for a doctor or a dentist through your hotel.  Keep all your receipts. 
Tourists requiring urgent medical care should go to the nearest hospital emergency room (airports and many train stations also have medical teams and first aid facilities).

Banking


Banks are usually open Monday through Friday, 9:00am - 4:00pm and are closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. Some banks close for an hour during lunch.

Belgium is a member of the EURO currency area. The euro is divided into 100 cents

Getting around
Bus

The regional bus company De Lijn services the city of Bruges as well as Flanders, with more than 50 routes serving the city and surrounding areas, including the coast.

Bicycle

Cycling is a popular and practical way to get around in Bruges, but cyclists should be careful on the narrower streets.

Tipping

Service charges and VAT are always included in prices. If exceptional service is given tip at your discretion. Suggested tip for portage is 1 Euro per piece; for coatroom attendants 1.25 to 2.50 Euro per coat; for bathroom attendants 0.25 to 0.50 Euro

The municipal water supply in Belgium is considered safe to drink.

A.C. 220 volts - 50 cycles. Plugs are of the round 2-pin type.

Shopping
Bruges is one of the most attractive shopping cities in West Flanders, with a large variety of shops within easy reach of everyone's budget. The main shopping streets are situated between Market square and the old city gates: Steenstraat, Simon Stevinplein, Mariastraat, Zuidzandstraat, St.-Jakobsstraat, St.-Amandsstraat, Geldmuntstraat, Noordzandstraat, Smedenstraat, Vlamingstraat, Philipstockstraat, Academiestraat, Hoogstraat, Langestraat, Smedenstraat, Katelijnestraat and Gentpoortstraat. Between Noordzandstraat and Zuidzandstraat you will find the cosy shopping centre Zilverpand.

Language

There are three officially recognized languages: French and Dutch are the main languages; German is spoken by a small segment of the population and English is widely spoken.

Religion

Roman Catholicism has traditionally been Belgium's majority religion; being especially strong in Flanders.


Time zone
Belgium is six hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time and nine hours ahead of Pacific Standard time.
