Long distance calls

Telephone calls from your hotel to Canada are expensive and service charges are high.  We would suggest you ask your family and friends to call you, while in Germany.
Phone calls are charged per minute, including local calls. Rates vary considerably, depending on time of day and distance. Calls are much cheaper between 18:00-09:00 and all day at weekends and on national public holidays. The lowest rate is between 21:00 and early morning, which applies to long-distance calls in particular.
For international calls, reduced rates are charged for some countries at certain times of day. Please note that calling from a mobile has different and usually higher tariffs.
One of the cheapest ways to keep in touch with your family and friends is to use an international prepaid calling card

Emergency

You can ask for a doctor or a dentist through your hotel.  Keep all your receipts.
Tourists requiring urgent medical care should go to the nearest hospital emergency room (airports and many train stations also have medical teams and first aid facilities).

Banking

In general banks are open from 08:30 or 09:00 until 16:00. On Wednesdays smaller branches are often closed, and larger banks may close at 13:00. Banks frequently stay open until 18:30 on Thursdays

Currency

The German currency was previously the deutschmark, but it is now the Euro

Getting around

Bus

The Kolner Verkehrs-Betriebe (KVB) ensures convenient and fast travel around town. Most local train stations are linked to tram stops and are equipped with live departure boards.  Almost all KVB trams and buses are provided with ticket machines. You can pay with coins or Geldkarte money card/e-purse. Tickets are also available at ticket machines next to public transport stops and at any KVB travel desk.

Train

With its inter-capital and high-speed connections to Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Hamburg, London and Paris, Cologne’s central rail station Koln Hauptbahnhof is one of Europe’s most important rail network hubs.

Taxi

Take an off-white taxi or a licensed mini-cab to get you quickly around the city. There are usually taxis queuing at Cologne Central Station, Koln Hauptbahnhof and at Koln Bonn Airport. You will also find them at designated ranks located in prominent places, such as rail stations, tram and bus stops or large hotels. Off-white taxis must be equipped with metres. Cologne’s taxi drivers are obliged to apply the basic tariff of € 2.20 plus extra charges for each kilometre driven. These charges are subject to the distance, day or night, Sunday or public holiday tariffs and waiting times. Drivers are not obliged to wait for more than 15 minutes. For distances exceeding 65 or 69 kilometres you may agree on a flat rate with the driver. You may tip taxi drivers or round up to the full Euro amount.
