During your stay

City highlights

Lugano, the largest town in the holiday region of Ticino, is not only Switzerland's third most important financial centre, but also a town of parks, villas and sacred buildings. With Mediterranean flair, Lugano offers all the advantages of a world-class city, combined with the cachet of a small town.
The center of town is Piazza della Riforma, which is dominated by a neoclassical city hall constructed in 1844. From here it is easy to explore the ancient streets of the Old Town on foot.

Getting around
The city is easily explored on foot. Local busses and taxis are readily available.
There is easy access to inter-European rail networks from the central train station.

Shopping
Something typically Swiss? Exclusive watches and jewellery, attractive fashions and stylish accessories; not forgetting Swiss chocolate!

Shops are generally open from 8 or 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday until 5 p.m. Supermarkets and department stores are open all day and on Thursday they are open until 9 p.m.

The Lugano market takes place on Tuesday & Friday from 8 a.m. to noon in Piazza della Riforma. It's a wonderful collection of local produce, flowers, trinkets and curiosities.

Dining
Lugano's Italian heritage is very evident in its food. Mediterranean style cooking has here fused with classic German and Austrian styles to create a truly unique culinary tradition. You will also find many international restaurants.

Sightseeing
Aside from the charm of the city itself and its wealth of art and architecture, one of the great draws of Lugano is the outdoors. There are trails into the Alps for all levels of fitness and experience.

The two closest mountains to Lugano, Monte San Salvatore and Monte Bre, give you an outstanding panorama of the town, Lake Lugano and the alpine scenery. From Monte Bre there is a walk down to the village of Bre, which has preserved its typical Ticino village centre, and enhanced it with works of art. From Monte San Salvatore, another popular walk leads down through the beautifully situated Carona to Lake Lugano at Morcote. Taking a boat trip back to Lugano is a splendid way to round off the day. Other excursions are to the fishing village of Gandria, up the Monte San Giorgio or the Monte Generoso, or Swissminiatur at Melide, a miniature version of the entire country.
