During your stay

Currency
The currency is the Australian dollar. Notes come in $100, $50, $20, $10 and $5 denominations. Coins come in $2, $1, 50c, 20c, 10c and 5c denominations. Prices are rounded to the nearest 5c.

Shopping
From locally-designed originals to the best international brands, the possibilities in Melbourne's shopping areas are endless. Explore department stores and shopping centres and meander through the city's myriad arcades and laneways. Melbourne is also home to the famous Queen Victoria Market. Opened in 1878, it has become a historic landmark and is a must-see for any visitor to Melbourne!

Credit cards
Visa, MasterCard and - with exceptions - American Express are accepted in virtually every hotel in major cities throughout the country, as well as in most stores and restaurants.

Eating & Drinking
Melbourne's melting pot of cultures is reflected in its variety of restaurants, cafés, bistros and bars. Fashionable, eclectic and eccentric, Melbourne’s dining spots offer a dizzying array of the world’s great cuisines, serving meals from the classic to the truly exotic. In the city, it’s possible to enjoy an afternoon tea in the genteel surroundings of a nineteenth-century hotel, watch and be watched in buzzing laneway cafés and bars and handpick a bottle of Yarra Valley Chardonnay at the latest über-chic hangout.

Tipping
Tipping is not a custom in Australia and service charges are not added to bills by hotels and restaurants. Porters at airports, taxi drivers and the like do not expect to be tipped although you may do so if you wish. In higher end restaurants, it is customary to tip up to 10 per cent.

Climate
With the seasons being the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere’s, the summer in Australia starts in December and the winter runs from June to September. Due to its size and geographical location, Australia experiences a wide array of climates. It is consistently hot and dry in the desert of the Outback, while the hot tropical north is subject to heavy rains from December to March. In the southern part of the country, the seasonal variations become clearer, with warm summers and cool winters.

Health
Australia has an excellent health care system. It’s a mixture of privately run medical clinics and hospitals alongside a system of public hospitals funded by the Australian government. There are also excellent public health facilities for women and children in Australia’s major centres.
