Long distance calls

Telephone calls from your hotel to Canada are expensive and service charges are high.  We would suggest you ask your family and friends to call you, while in Greece.

To call Canada from Greece, begin with 001 followed by the country code, area code and number.  Some phone booths may not handle international calls. Please note that calling from a mobile has different and usually higher tariffs

Emergency

You can ask for a doctor or a dentist through your hotel.  Keep all your receipts.

Tourists requiring urgent medical care should go to the nearest hospital emergency room (airports and many train stations also have medical teams and first aid facilities).

Banking

Banking Hours: each bank has its own banking hours but if you do your banking in the mornings, all of them are certain to be open from Monday to Friday, 08:00-13:00.

Credit Cards: All major Credit Cards are recognized and accepted in most hotels, shops, travel and car rental agencies and restaurants. Stickers in the front windows will advise you as to which cards are acceptable.

Currency

The currency is the Euro, previously Drachma.

Getting around

There are fairly good roads on Paros connecting all the major villages on the island. You can rent a car or a bike, take taxis or use the local buses.

Sightseeing

Optional excursions are a great way to enhance your Air Canada Vacations holiday. Choose from a wide variety of activities and excursions available at your destination. For more information or to reserve your excursion, please see our activities section

Tipping

In restaurants a service charge is normally included in the bill and while a tip is not expected (as it is in North America), it is always appreciated and should be left if the service has been good.
Taxi drivers normally expect you to round up the fare, while bellhops who help you with your luggage to your hotel room or stewards on ferries who take you to your cabin normally expect a small gratuity of between €1 and €3.

Water

Visitors should always be careful of the water in remote areas and in most of the islands (especially in the Cyclades). Tap water in Athens and the major cities of Greece is drinkable.

Electricity

The power supply in Greece is 220 V AC at 50 Hz. You may require an adapter for the round two-pin sockets in use in Greece.

Shopping

Most shops are in Parikia and you can get everything from cheap souvenirs to antiques and jewellery. Marble from the island in various shapes, local wine and embroideries are nice presents for yourself or friends.

Language

The predominant language in Greece is Modern Greek (Demotike), with its origins dating back 3,500 years. English and French are also used as well as, to a lesser degree.

Religion

The Greek population is composed of a 97% of Christian Orthodox. The rest of the population is Muslim, Roman Catholic and Jewish. Greek Muslims make up about 1.3% of the population

Time zone

During the winter months, Greece is on Eastern European Time (EET), which is 2 hours later than GMT. In the summer months, when Daylight Savings Time is in effect, Eastern European Summer Time (EEST) is used, which is 3 hours later than GMT
