Before you leave Canada

Entry requirements
Canadian citizens do not require a visa to enter Korea for tourism for a stay of 90 days or less. For all other nationalities, consult your consulate or tourist board for details. You can also visit www.voyage.gc.ca for up-to-date information.

Baggage
Please refer to aircanada.com for baggage information.

Airport check-in
It is recommended that you present yourself at the airport counter of the airline indicated on your voucher 3 hours prior to departure. Air Canada or Air Canada Vacations representatives will be available starting at 5 a.m.

During your stay

Currency
The currency in Korea is the Korean won. The bill denominations are 1,000 won, 5,000 won, 10,000 won and 50,000 won. The coins are found in 10 won, 50 won, 100 won and 500 won.

Shopping
Good purchases are clothing, sportswear, leather and fur goods, antiques and replicas, jewellery (Korea is the home of amethyst), ginseng, folk arts and crafts, traditional liquors and teas. There are also many shopping malls that stay open at night. Keep in mind that foreign visitors may be refunded 70 to 80% of their paid VAT (value added tax) and SET (special excise tax) at certain retail outlets.

Banking
Credit cards are widely accepted but Koreans prefer cash. The ATMs at banks are sometimes only accessible during bank hours but there are ATMs at convenience stores and subway stations that you can access 24 hours.

Food
Seoul cuisine is renowned for its elegance and variety. Seoul, Gaeseong and Jeonju are the three top cities in Korea known for their exquisite cuisine. In addition to being nutritious, Korean food is low in calories due to the dishes being made up mainly of vegetables. You must try kimchi which is a world-famous dish of fermented cabbage and chilli pepper.

Health
There are many hospitals where some English is spoken. International clinics at large general hospitals like Severance Hospital, Asan Medical Center or Samsung Medical Center are recommended.

Time zone
Standard time in Korea is 9 hours ahead of GMT. There is no daylight saving time.

Climate
Korea has four seasons, with a wet monsoon/summer in the middle of the year and a cold winter from November to March. The island of Jeju off the southern coast is the warmest and wettest place in the country. The most ideal time to visit Korea is during the autumn months (September-November). The busiest time is spring (April-May), which is also the most beautiful as the cherry trees are in bloom.

Electricity
The standard voltage in Korea is 220 volts. The outlet has two round holes and is the same type used in France, Germany, Austria, Greece, Turkey and many other countries.

Each time you leave Canada for at least 48 hours, you are eligible to declare up to 400 CAD of merchandise. A written declaration may be requested.
